Two brushfires erupt in remote areas of Ka‘u Tuesday (April 25)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 1:55 p.m. alarm Tuesday (April 25) for two brushfires along Kaalaiki Road in Ka‘u. Crews arrived to find brushfire directly off Kaalaiki Road. Crews put out the fire and while concluding operations discovered another fire about one mile down Kaalaiki Road in a remote gulch above a Macadamia Nut orchard.

Independence Day runaway brushfire in Kona nearly contained Sunday (July 5)

The Hawaii Fire Department reports that the runaway brush fire in the area south of the Kona Palisades and Kona Acres subdivision off of Kaiminani Drive is 95% contained at this time.

Brushfire in Ka‘u closes Highway 11, traffic detoured through Punaluu Beach Park

Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 11) between the 56 & 57 mile markers in Punaluu is now open to all traffic. Use caution as fire personnel are still in the area to monitor against possible flare-ups of the brushfire.

Fire burns over 1,000 acres near South Point in Ka‘u

Fire/rescue crews answered a 2:31 p.m. alarm Sunday (June 1) to the Ka‘alu‘alu area of South Point for a brushfire. The brushfire originated near Ka‘alu‘alu Bay and was quickly pushed by tradewinds in a Northwest direction. About 1.5 hours after report of the fire the area burned was 421 acres.

Brushfire closes Highway 11 near Naalehu Wednesday night (Dec 19)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 9:26 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Dec 19) to a brushfire near the 63 mile marker of Highway 11. The fire burned in pasture land on the makai side of Highway 11 which was shut down for about three hours during firefighting operations. Trade winds in the area were at 20-35 mph.

Pahala brushfire burns 2,300 acres, highway shut down Tuesday (June 19)

As of Tuesday afternoon (June 19) the two brushfire areas near Pahala have burned about 2,300 acres. Highway 11 is closed at the 46 mile marker, motorists should avoid driving in the area.
