On November 8, 2011 at about 6:45 pm, South Hilo Patrol officers responding to a report of a body found near the Banyan Drive golf course discovered the body of an unidentified male. Based on the physical characteristics of the body and the clothing, investigators believed the remains were that of a male subject who was recently reported missing.

A 29-year-old woman reported that she was walking along Banyan Drive fronting the Otto Rose banyan tree around 8:45 p.m. when she was accosted by two women who beat her and stole her purse. The victim received injuries to her head, face and neck.

Fire, police and HELCO crews responded to Banyan Drive when an explosion blew open a 6x7 foot concrete and metal cover off a manhole. The explosion knocked out power to hotels and businesses in the area.
