Hawaiʻi Island police have charged a 33-year-old Hilo man in connection with a burglary and arson investigation involving a break-in and intentionally set fire at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center in Hilo. 

On Monday evening, (October 16), police and fire units responded to the old section of the facility off Waiānuenue Avenue. Arriving units found cells on the second floor of the building fully engulfed in flames. This portion of the facility was used as storage with the bottom floor utilized by maintenance personnel. It is a separate building from any other on the grounds used to house inmates. No inmates were in danger at any time therefor no evacuation was needed or conducted.

Hawaiʻi Island police have initiated arson investigations in connection with three out of four suspicious brushfires over the weekend in West Hawaiʻi.

All four fires were reported between 9:45 a.m. and 4:36 p.m. Sunday (April 10) between the areas of the 8-mile marker and the 26-mile marker off Highway 190 between Kailua-Kona and Waimea. Two are classified as third-degree arson, one is classified as fourth-degree arson and one is currently classified as a fire.

Hawaiʻi Island police have charged an Ocean View woman with arson in connection with a fire Wednesday (September 2) at the house she occupied. Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s helping in providing information about a suspicious fire at an unoccupied house in the Puna District.

In the early hours of June 12, police and firefighters responded to a house on North Glenwood Road in Kurtistown, one-tenth of a mile in from Route 11, to find the structure totally engulfed in flames. Upon further investigation it was determined that the house had been vacant for some time and was unoccupied.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a suspected burglary and arson at a Puna business that resulted in approximately $20,000 in property damage.

Puna Patrol Officers responded to a 2:15 a.m. call Thursday (May 21) reporting a structure fire at Verna’s Drive-In just off Highway 11 in the Mountain View area. Arriving officers found the front door open and a small fire burning inside.
