Stene: Disappointed with the lack of communications from state agencies

I’ve had issues with two state departments, Hawaii Department of Transportation and the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The DLNR has posted various documents pertaining to the Thirty Meter Telescope on their website. I inquired if they’re going to post a certain document that grants the TMT the authorization to start construction on Mauna […]

Stene: Kona sewer upgrade in limbo as bid process fails to secure contractor twice

I don’t live in the Lono Kona subdivision slated for a sewer connection upgrade, but I’ve followed the bidding process for this project. The January 29th, 2018 bid opening had four contractors submit bids; Isemoto Contracting was lowest at $7,728,427.25, and Goodfellow Brothers was highest at $10,726,943.25.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation decided to defer most roadway capacity projects in 2016. This is why there won’t be a lot of new roads constructed statewide going forward. I didn’t agree with this arbitrary decision, as I believe there is a way to continue the much-needed capacity program, along with maintaining the existing inventory of state roads and highways.

Stene: Lack of communication with Mayor’s Kim’s administration is discouraging

Mayor Harry Kim’s administration has been in office roughly six months. The way I’ve been treated over this period of time has been nothing short of abysmal, and made me very discouraged about interacting with his administration about transportation issues. It isn’t very appealing to get a phone call from the mayor directly, who proceeds to […]

Stene: Public communications with DPW staff stymied

Mayor Harry Kim ran on a platform of transparency, and restoring trust in county government. Nonetheless, his administration has taken action against me, which goes against those campaign promises. The problems started on February 6th, 2017 when the Department of Public Works director Frank DeMarco sent me an official e-mail stating that I cannot communicate […]

Stene: Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11) Safety Issues

There are serious roadway safety issues on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11) between Kuakini Highway/Queen Kaahumanu Highway Extension intersection and Hawaiian Ocean View Estates. First and foremost, the asphalt pavement is in dire need of being resurfaced for most of this highway. Both the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) and Hawaii County are responsible for maintenance, […]

Stene: Ane Keohokālole Highway Phase III should be a top priority for Hawaii County

Ane Keohokālole Highway Phase III should be top transportation project for Hawaii County in North Kona. This segment will connect Hina-Lani Street to Kaminani Drive, so we’ll be able to drive from Henry Street to Kona Palisades without having to use Mamalahoa or Queen Kaahumanu highways.

I don't think it would be wise to split Hawaii County into two counties. Yes, West Hawaii does pay 70% of the property taxes. However, this disparity is due in part to the value of the homes being higher on the west side versus the east side. In other words, West Hawaii homeowners are subsidizing the lower property taxes paid from East Hawaii residents.
