Cliff loved puzzles and was a puzzle himself. He was challenging; running you through a series of innocuous questions inevitably leading to a conclusion he hand-picked for you. Cliff had many confusing personas; the unassailable hero dentist, the community builder, the mischief-prone Rotarian, and the relentless, obnoxious contrarian. He remarked that his favorite compliment came […]

I’m very disappointed with our Big Island state legislators. They haven’t responded to any of my emails, which expressed concern about the Hawaii Department of Transportation’s decision to defer all new state highway projects. State Senator Josh Green was the only legislator that truly acknowledged my concerns about the HDOT’s shortsighted decision.

However, this disparity is due in part to the value of the homes being higher on the west side versus the east side. In other words, West Hawaii homeowners are subsidizing […]

I am very annoyed by the United Public Worker’s (UPW’s) slickly produced ads that state health care is people. Yes, health care is people, I get it. However, the overhead cost of these same people is strangling the hospitals to death. I don’t see the unions, such as the UPW, helping matters by reducing that […]

The debate over the Thirty Meter Telescope has become extremely divisive for our community. These protests segued from protecting Mauna Kea to a debate over the restoration of the Hawaiian Kingdom and questioning the legitimacy of the State of Hawaii. The lack of enforcement by Hawaii County and the State of Hawaii isn’t helping matters.

I am very proud that we are known throughout the world as the best place on Earth to study the universe. My concerns regarding access are not only personal, but socioeconomic. Aside from my own portfolio aspirations to have continued access to the summit in the evening, the ramifications of preventing star gazers and astro […]

Governor Ige’s administration, and to a lesser extent, the County of Hawaii, are doing a poor job handling the ongoing Thirty Meter Telescope protests on Mauna Kea. The governor’s proposed changes to the stewardship of Mauna Kea offended both the protesters and the individuals who’ve helped preserve this sensitive area.

Despite Hawai’i Governor, David Ige, speaking on 5/26/15 of the state’s failings to preserve and protect Mauna Kea and the need for change, he has given the green light for further destruction and desecration of Hawai’i’s most sacred temple. The Governor expressed his approval to construct the $1.4 billion Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) atop Mauna […]
