Updates on Hawaii Electric Light power outages for Friday (Aug 24)

As Hurricane Lane slowly passes Hawai‘i Island, Hawai‘i Electric Light employees are responding to power outages caused by torrential rains, strengthening winds, and catastrophic flooding. About 9,500 customers around the island experienced power outages related to heavy rain and fallen trees. Electric service has been restored to the majority of these customers.

Hurricane Lane Red Cross evacuation center update for Friday (Aug 24)

Hawaii Red Cross volunteers are supporting the following County evacuation centers across the State in response to Hurricane Lane. As of Thursday night, there were a total of 1,526 people across 36 shelters statewide. Residents are encouraged to listen to their local County Civil Defense for further updates.

Hawaii Island has been downgraded to a Hurricane Watch. Excessive rainfall associated with Lane will impact the Hawaiian Islands into the weekend, leading to significant and life-threatening flash flooding and landslides.

Flash Flood Warning for Hawaii Island extended into Friday (Aug 24)

At 9:15 p.m. HST, weather radar and rain gauges continue to show areas of heavy rain along the windward and southeast sections of Hawaii Island, with the heaviest rains focusing upslope of Hilo in the Wailuku River valley, and along the slopes of Hamakua coast from Laupahoehoe to Honokaa.

The Hawaii State Department of Health is advising the public to stay out of streams, coastal, and standing waters that are contaminated by stormwater. Stormwater may contain harmful micro-organisms from overflowing cesspools or septic tanks as well as animal waste washed into streams and storm drains.
