Dog rescued Monday (April 29) off Hilo cliffside

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Fire/rescue responded to a 9:43 a.m. alarm Monday (April 29) to the end of Kahoa Street in the Honolii area of Hilo to rescue a dog.

A man called emergency responders about his dog which was chasing a mongoose and fell down an 80-foot cliff. The dog ended up on a small outcrop about 40-feet down the cliffside.

A 5-person crew from the Waiakea rescue station responded to the call and used a rope system which can lower and raise a rescue specialist. The specialist found an 8-year-old pitbull/mix dog and connected a rope to the dog’s chest harness. Crew members raised both the specialist and the dog up the cliff to be reunited with the owner.

There were no injuries reported in the event.
