A flash flood watch is in effect for Hawaii Island until Monday afternoon.

Moisture from Tropical Storm Niala will continue to move over Hawaii Island. Storm total rainfall amounts of 6-12 inches and local amounts up to 16 inches will be possible. Rainfall is likely to be higher along south and east slopes. Saturated ground conditions will support quicker and more widespread flooding than might be expected otherwise.

In addition to flood prone areas heavy rains may cause flooding in areas outside the designated flood zones. Severe runoff will make low spots in the road dangerous and impassable. High amounts of debris in streams and gulches may clog bridges and culverts resulting in dangerous flooding and significant property damage outside the usual channel.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Excessive runoff may cause rockslides and mudslides in steep terrain.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
