Search for UH-Hilo chancellor begins

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Chancellor Search Advisory Committee has been appointed, and the committee will begin meeting immediately. A local, national and international search will be opened with the assistance of a professional firm, and the committee hopes to begin screening applicants and nominees by the end of February 2018.

As of yesterday afternoon, Keōpū Deepwell installation is complete. The Department has begun the disinfection and water quality testing process, which once successfully completed, will render the Keōpū Deepwell fully operational and ready for use. The Department anticipates this will happen by Monday, December 25, 2017.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating the theft of chainsaws and other equipment in North Kohala.

The theft occurred between Tuesday, (December 19), at 5:00 p.m., and Wednesday,(December 20) at 8:00 a.m.

Suspects entered a locked tool storage at the Kohala Plants Nursery and stole four chainsaws, a Stihl 25, 18”, Stihl 26-22”, Echo CS340-14”, and Echo CS341-14”.  They also took a cordless Milwaukee Sawzall, 18V Dewalt drill, and driver and an Electric Winch.

A Pāhoa man arrested Tuesday afternoon, (December 19), in connection with a hostage situation in Puna was flown to an Oʻahu hospital for additional treatment of his injuries.

At 5:39 a.m., that morning, police responded to a report of a shooting on Nohea Street in the Leilani Estates Subdivision. Officers located the victim, a 25-year-old Keaʻau man, on the side of the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds to his body.

Hostage incident ends in Puna with the arrest of a 33-year-old Leilani man.

A hostage standoff in Leilani Estates ended just after 2 p.m. after the suspect emerged from the residence he barricaded himself in since early this morning. After coming out of the home, the suspect shot himself in the facial area with a rifle. Medics were on scene and he was immediately transported to the Hilo Medical Center for treatment. The suspect has been identified as Jovin Chang of Leilani Estates.

Hawaiʻi Island Police are searching for a 16-year-old Kamuela youth who was reported missing. Jacob Mead was last seen on (August 8), in Hilo. He is described as 5-feet-8-inches, 160 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair. Police ask anyone with information on his whereabouts to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311

During the week of December 11, 2017, through December 17, 2017, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 24 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Five of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,115 DUI arrests compared with 1,061 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.1 percent.
