Fire/rescue crews answered a 9:35 p.m. alarm Sunday (Oct 22) to Hawaiian Acres at the corner of roads 4 and G for a structure fire.

Crews arrived to find an abandoned single-story home, about 800 square feet in size, engulfed in flames with an abandoned car blocking the driveway.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flash flood watch for Hawaii Island Monday through Tuesday afternoon (Oct 23-24).

Heavy showers associated with an upper trough and cold front moving down the island chain could result in flash flooding Monday through Tuesday. The latest guidance indicates the greatest potential for flooding will occur over Oahu, Maui County and Hawaii Island.

A brush fire that was reported earlier in Pahala is under control but fire crews remain on scene addressing "hot spots". Kaalaiki Road in Pahala was closed for about 24 hours while HFD attempted to gain control of the fire. Approximately 35-40 acres have been destroyed by the fire.

The fire is still active but it has moved East of the origin. No homes or structures are in danger.

One inmate, who was housed in that unit, is confirmed to have a case of chickenpox. That inmate is currently in isolation to prevent the spread. No other inmates have shown symptoms of chickenpox. As a precaution, the Waianuenue male housing unit is under quarantine this weekend. Inmates in that unit will be allowed extra phone calls to make up for the lost visits. Visits in all other HCCC housing units are still running as scheduled this weekend.

Firefighters responded to a 6:30 a.m. alarm Friday (Oct 20) to Panda Express at 368 E. Makaala Street for a structure fire.

Upon arriving firefighters found a small fire contained to the kitchen area of the restaurant with nobody in the building. Firefighters broke into the building and found a propane gas line to an appliance on fire. Crews shut-off the gas line stopping the fire at 6:40 a.m. and there was no further damage.
