During the week of August 21, 2017, through August 27, 2017, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 744 DUI arrests compared with 685 during the same period last year, an increase of 8.6 percent.

A 43-year-old Paʻauilo man died following a single vehicle crash Sunday morning (August 27), in Paʻauilo.

He has been identified as Glennon Pine.

Responding to a 2:47 a.m. call, police determined that a 1998 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Pine was traveling west on Hauola Road, near Pōhākea Road when he ran off the roadway.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 7 p.m. alarm Sunday (Aug 27) to Kapaau Road in North Kohala for a structure fire.

Upon arrival crews found a single family home engulfed in flames and collapsing. Several propane large propane tanks exploded during the fire with others venting fuel.

Hawaiʻi Island police have charged 28-year-old Gaelynn Kahee in connection with the traffic fatality in Puna (August 24). 

On (August 25), at 8:33 p.m., police charged Kahee with third-degree Negligent Homicide, Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Death or Serious Bodily Injury and Driving Without a License.
