Police seek theft suspects caught on camera

Hawaiʻi Island Police are asking the public for help in identifying the persons whose images were captured on surveillance cameras in connection with a theft from a Hilo store. On Monday (May 15), items removed from the store. The incident was captured on video surveillance cameras.

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s assistance in providing the whereabouts of three people wanted for outstanding bench warrants. These individuals have no known connection to each other; however all have ties to the Volcano area in the Puna District.

EPA requires County of Hawaii to close large cesspools in Pahala and Naalehu

Thursday (June 22) the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced an agreement with the County of Hawaii to close seven large capacity cesspools (LCCs) that serve the Pahala and Naalehu communities. The County will replace the cesspools with wastewater treatment systems approved by the Hawaii Department of Health.

Brushfire burns in Puna Thursday (June 22)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 2:38 p.m. alarm Thursday (June 22) to 35th Avenue and Orchidland Drive in Puna for a brushfire. Crews had the brushfire under control by 3:20 p.m. and it was declared out at 3:50 p.m. The fire burned about 3.6 acres, there were no injuries reported.

Coast Guard suspends search for sailor and boat lost in Pacific

The Coast Guard suspended the active search Thursday for a solo-sailor aboard the 36-foot sailing vessel Celebration last reported 1,800 miles southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. Richard Carr, 71, remains missing.

Volcano Watch: HVO logs renewed seismic activity at Lō‘ihi

The most recent confirmed eruption of Lō‘ihi occurred in 1996. That year, an energetic earthquake swarm began in July and quickly intensified, motivating a scientific expedition to Lō‘ihi.
