Police DUI stats for the week of October 17-23, 2016

During the week of October 17, 2016, through October 23, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 24 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 889 DUI arrests compared with 863 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,131 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,248 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.4 percent.

So far this year, there have been 21 fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (three of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 24 fatalities, compared with 13 fatal crashes (two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 16 fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 61.5 percent for fatal crashes and 50 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
