Hawaiʻi Island police are asking the public for help in identifying individuals or businesses who are responsible for the dumping of abandoned and derelict vehicles.

Since January 1, approximately 280 abandoned or derelict vehicles have been reported in the Kona District alone, compared with 106 reported during the same period in 2015.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 3:38 p.m. alarm Thursday (June 23) t0 14-3507 Lehua Road in Puna for a structure fire.

Crews arrived to find a tri-level home on fire with about 50-70 percent burning. There was a partial collapse to some walls and the roof.

During the week of June 13, 2016, through June 19, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 520 DUI arrests compared with 469 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.9 percent.

Average retail gasoline prices in Hawaii have risen 2.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.75/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 355 gas outlets in Hawaii. This compares with the national average that has fallen 4.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.34/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking the public for help in identifying a person whose image was captured on surveillance cameras in connection with a shoplifting investigation. On April 25, items were shoplifted from a store in Hilo. The incident was captured on video surveillance cameras.

A 32-year-old Pāhoa woman died Friday (June 17) from injuries she received after being involved in a two-vehicle crash on Route 11 at the 21-mile marker in Glenwood.

The victim was identified as Crystal M. Mercado-Lopez of a Pāhoa address.

Responding to a 5 p.m. call, Puna Patrol officers determined that Mercado-Lopez was operating a 2001 Plymouth four-door sedan and traveling south on Route 11
