The Hawaiʻi Island Safety and Security Professionals Association recognized Officer May Lee as “Kohala Officer of the Quarter” for January-March during a ceremony on May 13.

Officer Lee was honored for a traffic enforcement project that led to the arrest of a wanted person who was in possession of a loaded gun.

On January 15, while conducting speeding enforcement, Lee stopped a motorist and recognized him as someone who was wanted on an outstanding bench warrant. The driver had been speeding, had no valid driver’s license, registration or insurance, and was using a fraudulent safety sticker. Lee arrested the driver and had the vehicle towed under Aliyah’s Law. Police recovered two unregistered firearms, one which was loaded, and initiated nine gun-related cases.

Lieutenant Juergen Canda praised Lee her for her “outstanding commitment” in nomination papers. “As a result of Officer Lee’s dedication to duty, vigilance and initiative, a suspicious person with extensive previous police contacts was located and arrested while cruising through a residential area with unregistered firearms and a loaded handgun,” Canda wrote.

The Hawaiʻi Island Safety and Security Professionals Association is an organization of hotel and airport security managers and visitor industry professionals. Its “Kohala Officer of the Quarter” program is an opportunity to recognize outstanding officers from the North Kohala and South Kohala Districts.
