Planned Parenthood launches online access to birth control in Hawaii

Monday (May 23), Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands officially announced the launch of Planned Parenthood Careâ„¢ in Hawaii. The app allows people to talk to a Planned Parenthood provider online and face-to-face through a secure video consultation system, and then receive birth control in the mail.

Hawaiʻi Island police are informing the public that the enforcement period for the National “Click It or Ticket” campaign starts today (May 23) and runs through June 5. During this period, police will increase islandwide enforcement of seat belt and child restraint laws.

Average retail gasoline prices in Hawaii have fallen 2.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.65/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 355 gas outlets in Hawaii. This compares with the national average that has increased 6.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.28/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Hilo man charged in connection with restaurant break-ins

A Hilo man has been charged with eight offenses in connection with break-ins at a Hilo restaurant. Police initially responded to a report that the restaurant, located on the 300 block of Keawe Street, had been broken into sometime between Wednesday (May 18) and Thursday (May 19).

With the approach of high school graduations and Memorial Day weekend, Hawaiʻi Island police will be on alert to help prevent tragedy on our roads.

Officers will conduct DUI checkpoints and roving patrols beginning tonight (May 20), and continuing through Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. The effort is part of a national and statewide campaign called “Drunk Driving: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

State Department of Health has identified a single imported case of dengue on Hawaii Island. Vector control crews have treated the person’s residence and adjacent properties today.

Again, this is a single imported case. There is no evidence to indicate a local transmission has occurred. There have been no reported dengue cases attributed to local transmission since March. Imported cases occur from time to time and remind all of us to always be vigilant and fight the bite.

Hawaiʻi Island police detectives have completed their investigation into a March 31 fatal shooting and have reclassified the case from a murder to a suicide.

Final autopsy results determined that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and that the manner of death was suicide.

Hawaiʻi Island police have charged a 15-year-old boy in connection with threatening notes left at Waiākea High School in Hilo.

At 11 a.m. Friday (May 20), the teen was charged with second-degree terroristic threatening and fourth-degree criminal property damage. He was then released to the custody of his family.
