Police DUI stats for the week of May 16-22, 2016

During the week of May 16, 2016, through May 22, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 446 DUI arrests compared with 385 during the same period last year, an increase of 15.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 568 major accidents so far this year compared with 596 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 10 fatalities, compared with six fatal crashes (two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in nine fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 50 percent for fatal crashes and 11.1 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
