A Hilo man has been charged with eight offenses in connection with break-ins at a Hilo restaurant.

Police initially responded to a report that the restaurant, located on the 300 block of Keawe Street, had been broken into sometime between Wednesday (May 18) and Thursday (May 19).

Investigation determined that a man, identified as 49-year-old Kenneth Harris of Hilo, had attempted to cash a check that had been stolen in another burglary at the same restaurant. Hilo Patrol officers arrested him and took him to the Hilo police cellblock while the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

Police determined that Harris was a suspect in several other burglaries at the same location since May 4. During one of the break-ins, a cash register was removed. On Thursday (May 19), police recovered the cash register from a storm drain canal near the bayfront soccer fields.

At 10:30 a.m. Friday (May 20), Harris was charged with two counts of second-degree burglary and one count each of second-degree theft, second-degree forgery, fourth-degree theft, fourth-degree criminal property damage, second-degree ID theft and unauthorized possession of confidential information. His bail was set at $15,500.

He remains at the cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday (May 23).
