Hawaiʻi Island police are seeking witnesses to a fatal vehicle-pedestrian collision Friday (May 27) at the Keaʻau Transfer Station.

In response to an 11:13 a.m. call Friday, officers determined that 78-year-old Gary S. Ambrose of Keaʻau was facing west at a trash shoot to dump garbage when he was struck by a 1990 Dodge van being operated by 66-year-old Perla Whitehawk-Taylor of Hilo.

Average retail gasoline prices in Hawaii have risen 4.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.72/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 355 gas outlets in Hawaii. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.32/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

A 78-year-old Puna man died Friday (May 27) in a vehicle-pedestrian collision at the Keaʻau Transfer Station.

He has been identified as Gary S. Ambrose of Keaʻau.

In response to an 11:13 a.m. call, officers determined that Abrose was facing west at a trash shoot to dump garbage when he was struck by a 1990 Dodge van being operated by 66-year-old Perla Whitehawk-Taylor of Hilo. He was pronounced dead at Hilo Medical Center at 2:40 p.m.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a vehicle-pedestrian accident in the Nānāwale Estates subdivision Thursday evening (May 26).

A 34-year-old Pāhoa man reported that he was walking southbound on Nānāwale Boulevard at 7:30 p.m. Thursday when a car traveling in the same direction at a high rate of speed struck him and left the scene.

Police looking for a hit-and-run driver that struck a man on Nanawale Blvd.
