During the week of April 11, 2016, through April 17, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 323 DUI arrests compared with 279 during the same period last year, an increase of 15.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 421 major accidents so far this year compared with 447 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.8 percent.
So far this year, there have been eight fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in nine fatalities, compared with five fatal crashes (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in seven fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 60 percent for fatal crashes and 28.6 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
