Lavaman Triathlon 2016: Race info, road closures

The 20th Annual Waikoloa Lavaman Triathlon is Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Waikoloa Beach Resort.

A total of 15 athletes — 10 men and five women — are entered in the elite/pro division. Among them are Big Island triathletes: Tim Marr, David Wild, Jonathan Baker, Chris Gregory, Winona Chen and Sara Bloom.

DISTANCES & RACE DESCRIPTION: Olympic Distance (1.5K Swim, 40K Bike and 10K Run) Swim at Anaehoomalu Bay at the Waikoloa Beach Resort. The Bike ride is out and back on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway then back into the resort. T1 & T2 are in the same location. The run is through the Waikoloa Beach Resort & the grounds of the Hilton Waikoloa Village and has varied terrain consisting of lava, sand, coral trail, road, lawn, & flagstone path with a beach finish.

RACE START: The pro/elite division starts at 7:20 a.m. and divisions will continue in a wave start through 8:04 a.m.

The first finishers are expected shortly before 9:30 a.m.

This year’s race is dedicated to Sharron Ackles, who passed away in August 2015 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Ackles served as Ironman World Championship Triathlon race director from 1992-2002.
