The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a wind advisory for the summits of Hawaii Island until 6 a.m. Sunday (March 27).

On Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 8,000 feet the forecast is for winds from the northwest at 35-45 mph with gusts to 55 mph.

The strong winds can make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Motorists should use caution while driving. The winds can also forcefully swing doors open or shut so use caution when opening or closing vehicle doors.

Mauna Kea summit access road is closed to the public at the Visitor Information Station at 9,200 feet due to the high winds along with foggy and icy road conditions.
