Special marine warning for Alenuihaha Channel, Hawaii Island leeward and windward waters extended

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a special marine warning for the Alenuihaha Channel, Hawaii Island leeward and windward waters along with Maui County windward waters until 12:30 a.m. Saturday (March 26)

At 10:35 p.m. weather doppler radar indicated a large area of strong thunderstorms capable of producing winds 34 knots or greater and small hail. The strongest storms are located west of Kona and northeast of the Kohala Coasts.

Mariners can expect gusty winds, high waves, dangerous lightning and heavy rains. Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until this storm passes.

Frequent lightning is occurring with this storm. If caught on the open water stay below deck if possible and keep away from ungrounded metal objects.
