Volcano Watch: Kilauea activity update for March 10, 2016

Kīlauea continues to erupt at its summit and East Rift Zone. During the past week, the summit lava lake was relatively stable, with the lake level around 30-33 m (98–108 ft) below the vent rim within Halema‘uma‘u Crater. On the East Rift Zone, scattered lava flow activity remains within about 6.7 km (4.1 mi) of Puʻu ʻŌʻō and is not currently threatening nearby communities.

Mauna Loa is not erupting. Seismicity remains elevated above long-term background levels. GPS measurements show continued deformation related to inflation of a magma reservoir beneath the summit and upper Southwest Rift Zone of Mauna Loa, with inflation recently occurring mainly in the southwestern part of the magma storage complex.

One earthquake was reported felt on the Island of Hawai‘i this past week. On Monday, March 7, 2016, at 12:29 p.m., HST, a magnitude-3.5 earthquake occurred 4.7 km (2.9 mi) west of Glenwood at a depth of 13.8 km (8.6 mi).
