State Senator Gilbert Kahele, 73, died early Jan. 26, 2016, after a short illness caused him to miss the Legislature’s opening day last week.

The news was announced Tuesday morning by Senate President Ron Kouchi, who interrupted a hearing on the Senate floor and led for a moment of silence.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a robbery Tuesday morning (January 26) in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in Puna.

Sometime between 8:45 a.m. and 9 a.m., a 30-year-old woman was checking her mailbox on Paradise Drive near the intersection of 21st Avenue when she was confronted by a man with a knife who demanded money.

Hawaii Island police have located Ted Nakaji, who was reported missing Monday. He was found at 12:41 a.m. Tuesday after a woman reported she had seen him near Richardson Beach and recognized him from the Nixle alert.

Salvage operations are expected to begin this week to remove a 39’ Coast-Guard documented powerboat “Hoku Kea,” which ran aground Friday evening off Kohanaiki beach, west Hawaii. 
 
Hawaii County closed Kohanaiki Beach Park pending removal of the boat and hazmat. Fuel leaked from the boat onto the immediate area of the beach, and debris from the boat was also found in the area.

Police renew their request for info to locate a Keaau man reported missing

Hawaiʻi Island police are renewing their request for information about a 59-year-old Keaʻau man who was reported missing. Barton Allen Bumatay is described as a local male, about 6-foot-1, about 255 pounds with a tan complexion, brown eyes and salt-and-pepper medium-length wavy hair. He was last seen on December 31 during the early evening hours.

During the week of January 18, 2016, through January 24, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 71 DUI arrests compared with 67 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.

These cases include 214 residents and 23 visitors. Currently there are three potentially infectious individuals.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating the discovery of human remains in the Puna District.

On Saturday, (January 23) detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section discovered human remains in the area of Beach Road off Makuʻu Drive in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. Detectives suspect foul play in this case, which is currently classified as a coroner’s inquest.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 1:50 p.m. alarm Saturday (Jan 23) to Kilauea Iki Crater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for an injured hiker.

A 54 year-old woman was hiking with her daughter across the floor of Kilauea Iki Crater then wandered about 50 feet off the trail. The woman lost her balance on some rocks, flipped backwards onto her head and back. The woman received multiple cuts and abrasions to her arms and legs.
