The Hawaii Fire Department reports a runaway brush fire in the area of the Kawaihae Road near the 65 mile marker. The Kawaihae road is closed at this time to all traffic between the Kohala Mountain Road or Highway 250 intersection and the intersection of Kawaihae Road and the Queen Kaahumanu Highway.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and to use alternate routes if possible. Fire personnel and heavy equipment are on scene and working to contain the fire and it is unknown at this time when the road will be reopened.
