HawaiianTel service outage affecting telecommunications on Hawaii Island (UPDATED)

HAWAII COUNTY CIVIL DEFENSE MEDIA RELEASE

This is a Civil Defense message this is a telephone service outage information update for Thursday October 22, 2015 at 10:45 a.m.

Hawaiian Telcom officials report that the telephone communication system is currently experiencing difficulties and the disruption may affect the ability to place a call to the 911 system. Hawaiian Telecom technicians are currently troubleshooting the problem this disruption may also affects some cellular telephone services. For persons need an emergency assistance anywhere on the island and unable to place a call to the 911 please report to the nearest police or fire station.

Reports on social media report that the HawaiianTel outage is affecting both Hawaii Island and Maui. Verizon Wireless customers also appear to be affected.

Internet services via HawaiianTel have been restored in Hilo. Hawaii County Civil Defense reports 9-1-1 emergency services phone number is working again. We will update again when information is available.

Hawaiian Telcom Media Release

Hawaiian Telcom has restored phone and Internet service to affected customers on Maui and the Big Island. Hawaiian Telcom technicians on Maui repaired damage to an aerial fiber-optic cable, restoring service by 12:30 p.m. today.

Customers who are still experiencing disruptions are asked to contact Hawaiian Telcom’s 24-Hour Customer Care Center at 643-6111 or submit an Online Support Form via hawaiiantel.com/support

Hawaiian Telcom thanks its customers for their patience and understanding.
