Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in locating a man wanted for threatening a family member with a firearm.

In response to a 5:38 p.m. call Monday (October 19) to the 18-1700 block of Ihope Road in Mountain View, Puna Patrol officers learned that 59-year-old Mark Scott Silva had gone to the home of his estranged wife and threatened a 20-year-old woman with a handgun. He then fled on foot into a heavily forested area.

Silva is described as Caucasian, 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-5, 150 pounds with hazel eyes, short gray hair and tattoos on both arms. He may have a goatee. He was last seen wearing black pants and a black T-shirt. He has no permanent address but frequents the Puna area.

Police caution anyone who sees him not to approach him, as he is considered armed and dangerous. Instead, anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the islandwide Crime Stoppers number at 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Crime Stoppers is a volunteer program run by ordinary citizens who want to keep their community safe. Crime Stoppers doesn’t record calls or subscribe to caller ID. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
