Olaf now a major hurricane at Category 4 strength

As of 11 p.m. HST Monday (Oct 19) Olaf was a major Category 4 hurricane and was about 1,175 miles (1,890 km) east southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. Maximum sustained winds are about 150 mph (240 km/h) with higher gusts. Olaf is moving west northwest at 10 mph (17 km/h).

Olaf is forecast to further strengthen tonight and tomorrow.

Hurricane force winds extend 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km).

Currently there are no watches or warnings for Hawaii for Hurricane Olaf.
