Police release name of fisherman swept into ocean and lost

MEDIA RELEASE

Hawaiʻi Island police are releasing the name of a man who went missing last weekend while fishing from a cliff in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in Puna.

He has been identified as 51-year-old Joseph M. Leialoha of Keaʻau.

Witnesses reported that a large wave swept him off a cliff near the intersection of Paradise Ala Kai and Road C and carried him out to sea at about 2:15 p.m. on September 26.

Repeated searches for him by the Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard were unsuccessful.
