Police are searching for a Puna youth who escaped custody

Hawaii Police looking for Kahekili Krause, 17-year-old, of Puna, who escaped from a Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility (HYCF) Officer shortly before 4 p.m. on Friday September 25. At the time he was being transported from Pahoa to the Hilo Airport in order to return him to the HYCF.

Extended furlough inmate Joshua Lopes-Keli failed to report to Hale Nani Reintegration Center in Hilo for his scheduled check-in at 3:30 p.m. State Sheriffs and Hawaii Police were notified. Inmates in the extended furlough program live and work outside of the facility but must check in at various times throughout the month.

Tropical storm force winds extend up to 80 miles (130 km) from the center. The center of Niala will pass about 100-150 miles south of Hawaii Island later Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for Hawaii Island until 11:30 p.m. tonight (Sept 25).

At 8:35 p.m. weather radar indicated moderate rainfall over the windward side of Hawaii Island which may produce localized flooding and ponding of water on roadways. Rain is expected to   continue for the next several hours.

Hawaiʻi Island police have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation in connection with a body found in Hilo Bay on Thursday evening.

Shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday, South Hilo Patrol officers responded to the 100 block of Banyan Drive to a report of a body floating in the bay.

The 11 p.m. Thursday (Sept 24) forecast track for Tropical Depression 6-C has shifted slightly south away from Hawaii Island. If TD 6-C does develop into a tropical storm it will be named Niala.
