During the week of September 21, 2015, through September 27, 2015, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 784 DUI arrests compared with 857 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.5 percent.

Police seek to identify Hilo burglary suspect

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a person wanted in connection with a burglary investigation. An unknown person entered a house on the 800 block of Kukuau Street in the Sunrise Estates subdivision in Hilo without permission. The suspect’s image was captured on surveillance video.

Kuuipo Taketa

Police are searching for a teenage girl reported missing

Hawaiʻi Island police are searching for a 16-year-old girl who was reported missing. Kuuipo Taketa was last seen in Hilo on July 1. She is described as Japanese/Filipino, 5-foot-2, 103 pounds with black hair, brown eyes, a fair complexion and a slim build. She has scars on her left forearms and on both thighs.

Average retail gasoline prices in Hawaii have fallen 5.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.88/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 355 gas outlets in Hawaii. This compares with the national average that has not moved  in the last week to $2.29/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Search crews spent Sunday (Sept 27) searching for a missing fisherman at the Kaloli Point area of Hawaiian Paradise Park.

A witness saw the fisherman swept off the shoreline cliff by high surf conditions about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The man was last seen floating in the water about 50 meters offshore.
