Still no sign of missing fisherman off Kaloli Point in Puna

Search crews spent Sunday (Sept 27) searching for a missing fisherman at the Kaloli Point area of Hawaiian Paradise Park.

A witness saw the fisherman swept off the shoreline cliff by high surf conditions about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The man was last seen floating in the water about 50 meters offshore.

Sunday ground crews did a shoreline search while a rescue boat with SCUBA divers checked the area where the fisherman was last seen along with north and south of that location. Chopper One was dispatched to do an aerial search about four miles north and south and up to 1/2 mile offshore.

Rescue crews were not able to locate the fisherman in the rough surf conditions generated by Tropical Storm Niala. The search was discontinued due to darkness and will continue at daybreak Monday (Sept 28).
