Fisherman swept off Puna shoreline cliff by storm generated waves

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 2:33 p.m. alarm Saturday (Sept 26) to the shoreline off Kaloli Point at Hawaiian Paradise Park for a missing fisherman.

A witness saw the fisherman swept off the shoreline cliff by high surf conditions. The man was last seen in the water about 50 meters off shore.

Crews staged at the bottom of Paradise Ala Kai Drive to search from shore, a rescue boat was dispatched while Chopper Two performed an aerial search.

Rescue crews were not able to locate the fisherman in the rough surf conditions generated by Tropical Storm Niala. The search was discontinued due to darkness and continues at daybreak Sunday (Sept 27).
