Tropical Depression 6-C forms southeast of Hilo, forecast to track south of Hawaii

The 11 p.m. Thursday (Sept 24) forecast track for Tropical Depression 6-C has shifted slightly south away from Hawaii Island. The system was about 490 miles (790 km) southeast of Hilo and is moving northwest at 7 mph (11 km/h). Maximum sustained winds are 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center’s forecast calls for the system to gradually strengthen over the next two days possibly becoming a tropical storm Friday. If it does develop into a tropical storm it will be named Niala. The forecast is for the system to begin weakening after 2-3 days.
