The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for West Hawaii until 6 p.m. Saturday (Sept 19).

At 3:02 p.m. weather radar indicated heavy rain that will cause minor flooding in West Hawaii. Heavy rain was falling at up to two inches per hour over the slopes of Hualalai.

Locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Kailua-Kona, Four Seasons Hualalai, Puuanahulu, Kahaluu-Keauhou, Kalaoa, Keauhou, Holualoa and Honalo.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Excessive runoff may cause rockslides and mudslides in steep terrain.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
