The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for Hawaii Island until 11:30 p.m. Wednesday (Sept 16).

At 9:26 p.m. weather radar indicated persistent heavy rain between Holualoa and Kealakekua with estimated rainfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour in this area. Minor flooding can be expected in the advisory area.

Locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook, Honaunau, Honaunau-Napoopoo, Kahaluu-Keauhou, Kealakekua, Keauhou and Holualoa.

UPDATE: Hawaii Police Department reports that Highway 11 between 58 and 59 mile marker is now open to traffic. All roads and highways are open at this time.

Locations in the warning include, but are not limited to, Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook, Honaunau, Pahala, Kawa Flats, Naalehu, Kealakekua, Kainaliu, Waikoloa and Puuanahulu.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Excessive runoff may cause rockslides and mudslides in steep terrain.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

This advisory may be extended beyond 11:30 p.m. should heavy rains persist.
