A very moist and unstable air mass will continue to produce locally heavy showers and thunderstorms this evening. Saturated soils from recent and current rainfall across the state will increase the risk for flash flooding.

UPDATED (6:28 p.m. on 9/4/2015)

The Hawaii Police Department reports that Hwy 11 between the 103mm and 108mm is now open. Proceed with caution due to wet conditions.

Hualalai Road remains closed between Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Hienaloli Road due to flooding.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the flash flood warning for Hawaii Island until 9 p.m.

At 5:39 p.m. weather radar showed heavy rain from Kailua-Kona to Keauhou. This area of heavy rain was moving southeast slowly.

Other locations in the warning include, but are not limited to, Kailua-Kona, Keauhou, Captain Cook and Honaunau.

This warning may be extended beyond 9 p.m. should flash flooding persist.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Excessive runoff may cause rockslides and mudslides in steep terrain.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
