The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood watch for Hawaii Island until 8:18 a.m. Saturday (Aug 22).

At 5 a.m. weather radar showed heavy rain over North Hilo, South Hilo, Puna and East Ka‘u districts. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary. Other locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Pepeekeo Papaikou, Paauilo, Ookala, Laupahoehoe, Honomu and Hakalau.

This watch may need to be extended beyond 8:15 a.m. if heavy rains continue.

A flash flood watch is also in effect for Hawaii Island until 6 p.m. Monday (Aug 24). Very moist air due to Tropical Depression Kilo has spread over Hawaii Island and Maui. This tropical moisture interacting with island terrain will produce localized…intense…slow-moving downpours that may lead to flash flooding.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Excessive runoff may cause rockslides and mudslides in steep terrain.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
