Hilda forecast to lose strength, tropical storm watch cancelled, residents should prepare for rain

As of 11 p.m. HST Wednesday (Aug 12) Hilda was reported to be a tropical storm centered about 240 miles (390 km) southeast of Hilo moving west at near 5 mph (7 km/h).

Hilda has maximum sustained winds near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km). Hilda may weaken to a tropical disturbance by tonight.

The tropical storm watch has been cancelled. A flash flood watch is in effect. A high surf and small craft advisory is in effect.

Hilda may produce heavy rainfall north of its path.
