Laupahoehoe to host Health and Safety Fair Saturday (Aug 29)

The first ever Laupahoehoe Health and Safety Fair will be held on Saturday August 29, 2015 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School (LCPCS) gymnasium. The Fair is presented to the community through partnership efforts of the Hilo-Hamakua Community Development Corporation (HHCDC), Hui Kako`o O Laupahoehoe (the Hui) and LCPCS. Special support is provided by the County of Hawai`i.

Councilwoman Valerie Poindexter and community member Judi Steinman created the Laupahoehoe Health and Safety Fair to bring much needed health services and emergency preparedness information to the entire Hilo-Hamakua coast.

Events planned for the day will focus on health care, healthy lifestyle choices and emergency response and management.

Almost fifty organizations are signed up to participate.

Participants include the Hilo Family Health Center, Bay Clinic, Hamakua Health Center, UH Hilo Daniel K Inouye College of Pharmacy, the UH Hilo School of Nursing, the Akaka Falls Lions Club, Project Vision Hawaii, the Blue Zones project and Civil Defense.

Events will include free health screening, cholesterol and diabetes testing, vaccinations, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) team participation, disaster preparedness presentations, yoga, eye exams and much more. The County pool will be open that day as well.

Sammy Sampaga of OSMD Hawaii will serve as Emcee for the event. Entertainment, activities and focus group talk story sessions will be held throughout the day. The Health & SafetyFair is geared for all ages and there will be activities for kupuna and keiki. Families are encouraged to attend.

Room is still available for organizations that provide health and safety related services.
