Pair arrested in stolen truck

MEDIA RELEASE

A man and a woman are in police custody after being found in a stolen pickup truck.

At 9:50 a.m. Wednesday (June 24), Kaʻū Patrol officers responded to a report of a suspicious truck in a driveway in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision. When they arrived, they determined that the Toyota Tacoma pickup truck had been reported stolen from a parking lot in Kailua-Kona sometime between May 30 and May 31.

As they were arresting the man who had been behind the wheel, the female passenger attempted to drive away in the truck and struck an officer’s patrol vehicle, causing minor damage.

The pair, 27-year-old Isaac Abrojena of Ocean View and 23-year-old Cheyanne Collins of Ocean View, were arrested and taken to the Kona police cellblock while detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

The truck was recovered and returned to its owner.

At 9 a.m. Friday, detectives charged Abrojena with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. His bail was set at $10,000. Collins was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and inattention to driving. Her bail was set at $11,000.

They remain at the cellblock pending their initial court appearances scheduled for Monday.
