By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Fire crews responded to a 1:44 p.m. alarm Saturday (May 16) to a brushfire near Kalopa Makai Road in Hamakua.

Firefighters arrived to find tall grass in a farm lot burning and rapidly growing due to winds pushing the blaze towards a residence. Crews were able to slow the fire’s progress using Chopper One performing water drops and ground units.

Crews had the fire under control by 4 p.m. and it was reported to be out at 5 p.m.

About 10 acres of field land was burned and two crew members will remain on the scene overnite to monitor hot spots and watch the edges of the burn area.

There was no damage to the residence and there were no injuries reported. The cause of the blaze is unknown.
