Police investigate gunshots fired in upper Waiakea Sunday (May 10)

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating reports of shots fired late Sunday (May 10) in Hilo.

At 10:08 p.m. Sunday, South Hilo Patrol officers responded to the upper Waiākea area of Hilo, where several residents said they heard multiple gunshots in the vicinity of Haihai Street and Nou Street. One car was damaged in the incident.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section are investigating the shooting as a first-degree reckless endangering case.

Police ask anyone with information about this case to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311 or contact Detective Todd Pataray at 961-2382 or todd.pataray@hawaiicounty.gov.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the islandwide Crime Stoppers number at 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
