The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high wind warning for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea until 6 a.m. Monday (March 9).

Winds are coming from the west at 45-70 mph with localized gusts over 90 mph. The strongest winds are expected to be Sunday day and night.

The strong winds can make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Motorists should use caution while driving. The winds can also forcefully swing doors open or shut so use caution when opening or closing vehicle doors.

The Mauna Kea summit access was open Saturday but visitors should check the Mauna Kea Weather Center for the latest information on road conditions at http://mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu/current/road-conditions/
