As of Wednesday, February 11, 2015 cellphones that are no longer under contract with many major carriers can be unlocked to allow you to switch wireless networks according to the CTIA – The Wireless Association. Which network you choose to use your phone on may depend on the capabilities of your cellphone.

The unlocking rule is a part of the CTIA Consumer Code for wireless customers due to an agreement made with the FCC in 2013 to make it easier for the public to switch carriers.

To unlock your non-contract cellphone you can visit your cellphone company’s unlock page for instructions:

Your cellphone may not be compatible with certain networks depending on the wireless capabilities built into the phone.
