Lens shaped lenticular clouds were produced near Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa Monday (Feb 2) due to high winds. This is a NOAA GOES satellite image taken Monday morning. According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu: Lenticular clouds are associated with waves in the atmosphere that develop when relatively stable, fast moving air is forced up and over a mountain and are generally perpendicular to the direction from which the upper-level wind is blowing (in this case, west). When sufficient moisture is present, clouds develop within the crest of these mountain waves where the air is rising.

Winds are coming from the west at 60-75 mph with localized gusts up to 90 mph.
The strong winds created some lenticular clouds over Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa Monday.
The strong winds can make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Motorists should use caution while driving. The winds can also forcefully swing doors open or shut so use caution when opening or closing vehicle doors.
The Mauna Kea access road is closed to the public due to the high winds.
