Accessible Hawaii has added another service for disabled people. Jean Hartley’s recent book, ‘Go Beyond: Coping with Disability’ is an aid for caregivers, family and healthcare professionals.
The book addresses the needs of those with limited mobility due to a variety of causes. ‘Go Beyond’ is the product of Hartley’s personal history of disability and her own coping techniques.
She also cites the challenged athletes in the Ironman World Triathlon Championship as admirable examples of adaptation to participate in a demanding competition.
Hartley’s handbook contains medical information, as well as resources for assistive devices, testimonies, short stories and a touch of humor – a vital survival tool.
The nonprofit organization’s next project is an island guidebook placed in all American Disability Act (ADA) hotel rooms in West Hawaii.

Hartley, a recent TED TALK speaker, is available for presentations to local organizations, support groups and to the public concerned about disability.
