Assisted loading of mulch available daily in Kona

MEDIA RELEASE

The county has announced increased services for West Hawaii. Kealakehe Recycling and Transfer Station in Kailua-Kona will offer assisted mechanical loading of mulch every day.

This is an increase from the prior service available only on Thursdays and Saturdays.

The service will be available daily 7 a.m.-4 p.m.

The service is available for residential or commercial customers for any size vehicle from small pickup trucks to large end-dump trailers.

The loading service requires a small loading fee depending upon the size and type of vehicle. For free mechanical loading of mulch, go to the West Hawaii Organics Facility.

More information is available at www.hawaiizerowaste.org/recycle/greenwaste under Kealakehe Recycling & Transfer Station Customer Procedures.

Customers will be required to pay at the time of service and will be served on a first come basis while supplies of mulch are available. The only forms of acceptable payment are debit or credit cards. No cash will be accepted.

The Kealakehe Recycling & Transfer Station also has free mulch available for self or hand loading without any fees. Vehicles must have a tarp or other method for covering the mulch load to avoid spillage on roadways.

Mulch has many benefits including improving the quality of your soil, providing an insulating layer on topsoil, keeping weeds down and minimizing water needs.

Mulch is also available without any loading fees at the county’s West Hawaii Organics Facility (WHOF) located adjacent to the West Hawaii Sanitary Landfill in Puuanahulu.
