Rotary Club of Kona receives $57,500 donation

Tournament officials from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai have presented a charitable donation in the amount of $57,500 to the Rotary Club of Kona.

On hand to present the check were Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Tournament Manager Kelly Fliear, Co-Volunteer Chairmen Kris Hazard and Larry Webb, along with Alan Clark, a 19-year tournament volunteer.

The Rotary Club of Kona has played an integral role in helping to organize the tournament volunteer corps since the tournament began in 1997. Each year, more than 400 volunteers contribute their time, talents and Aloha spirit in servicing the players, sponsors and spectators at the Four Seasons Hualalai Resort to ensure a successful event.

Additionally, The Big Island Junior Golf Association and the Daniel R. Sayre Foundation will each receive $5,000 contributions to assist the growth and development of junior golf and provide essential equipment and training to the county Fire Department, respectively.

“This year, 2014, was our sixth tournament on the Big Island. We couldn’t begin to host such a successful event without all the wonderful support that comes from many people here, including the hundreds of amazing volunteers who work so hard all week,” said Kiyoshi Furukawa, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc. “To be able to give something back in a meaningful way is gratifying for all of us at Mitsubishi Electric.”

“We feel privileged to continue our active role in the community by supporting the volunteer operations,” said Hazard, who has served as a volunteer with the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai for four years. “Our volunteers are the backbone of the tournament’s operations and we certainly could not stage an event of this magnitude without recognizing their efforts.”

Entering its seventh year as title sponsor of the Champions Tour’s season-opening event, Mitsubishi Electric’s support continues to elevate the Big Island community, while allowing the beauty of Hawai’i to be showcased around the globe via the international telecast.

“On behalf of the Champions Tour players and their families, tournament staff, and our on-site operations team, we are pleased to provide charitable contributions to this deserving non-profit group of outstanding citizens. Kona Rotary reinvests these funds to support Big Island community projects, valuable healthcare programs for kids, and college scholarships,” stated the tournament’s Executive Director, Brian Goin. “Since the Champions Tour’s arrival on Hawai’i in 1997, the tournament has raised over $940,000 for local charities. We would like to extend a big thank you to Mitsubishi Electric, the Four Seasons Hualalai Resort and the Hawaii Tourism Authority for their valuable partnerships.”
